“[...] and I don’t know who is right” A translator confused in a paratext: the mystery of the Malvinas Islands in Manuel Machón’s translation of Thomas Falkner’s Description of Patagonia (1774-1775)

In the last quarter of the 18th century, Manuel Machón translated Thomas Falkner’s work. This translation was urgently sent to Madrid, but it was not published for fifty years until its appearance in the Río de la Plata region in 1835. In his manuscript, Machón included a final peritext, consisting of a “letter” with information about English movements in the Malvinas Islands and a note, which illustrates the complexity of the translator’s work at a time of conflict between the Spanish and English crowns over the transoceanic passage.
