In this interview, Argentine historian Gabriela Águila shares her reflections on the fiftieth anniversary of the 1976 coup d'état in Argentina. She considers the commemoration a propitious moment to assess the current state of scholarship on the subject. She also delves into the key themes that characterize studies of recent history, as demonstrated by the First Congress on the History of the Military Dictatorship: Fifty Years After the 1976 Coup, recently held in Rosario. Furthermore, she explores the latest developments in research sources, the beneficial impact of trials for crimes against humanity on the opening of the so-called archives of repression, and the challenges that have arisen in accessing them. Finally, she discusses the conceptual tools commonly used in the field of research when "accounting for that particular process of violence that occurred in Argentina during the years of the dictatorship”.
