Brisas Libertarias: Anarchists and sea workers on the Isthmus of Panama, 1911-1918

The text proposes a characterization of the organizational strategies elaborated by anarchist militants in the Isthmus of Panama between 1911 and 1918. The reflection focuses on two associative experiences of sea workers, called Brisas Libertarias and Unión Marítima del Istmo. Inspired by different organizational styles and tactics of struggle, the two associations show the centrality that organization in the workplace and its plurality of experiences had for anarchism. Given the characteristics of the Panamanian context and the anarchist movement, we use a method of transnational analysis that allows us to better understand the dynamics of this experience. The anarchist press of several countries is used as the main source. Finally, the article aims to contribute to reflections on the social history of work from a perspective located in the Central American region, which has been little explored and known in Latin American historiography.
