Abstract

In this article we will analyze the content of seven of the first manuals of Domestic Economy published between 1865 and 1903, written by foreign and Argentinean authors, destinated for young women. We will study, on the one hand, what their purpose was and, on the other hand, what topics were covered in these manuals selected by the official authorities. We intend to show that they had as their main objective to teach girls that the natural destiny for them was to be a housewife, wife and mother. Secondly, we will point out that the texts developed three main themes: a) ways of keeping home economy, a key issue to avoid family ruin; b) how to acquire appropriate behaviors in front of the husband and educate emotions; c) and how to do household chores
