This article presents an assessment of the recent book Los regímenes de Portales y Rosas frente al mundo popular 1829-1852 whose authors compare the political regimes of Chile of the Conservative republic and the province of Buenos Aires under the administration of Juan Manuel de Rosas between the 1830s and 1850s. This comment tries to ponder the advantages and difficulties of doing comparative History in the Latin American context.
