Based on the distinction between anti-Judaism, anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, the expulsion of Jews from Spain -a tragic event for the lives of countless people- is revisited and analysed, comparatively, with Italian fascist racism. Avoiding simplifications and timeless responses, the article examines the almost servile attitude of the intellectual elite and the collective deafness of the overwhelming majority of the Italian people with respect to the “Racial Laws” of 1938. Certain common traits between the Spanish population of the 15th century and the Italian population of the 20th century are also considered. Finally, it reflects on the dramatic situation of migrants who are currently in search of freedom and work, relating them to past events and to the many tips and lessons offered by history.
