Abstract

The bond divorce bill presented by Olivera between 1901 and 1902 and its rejection is seen as an indicator of a reconfiguration of relations between the ruling elites and the Catholic Church. The reactions of both opposition and support arising in society around the project are an interesting way of analyzing the new web of relationships. In this article we evaluate how this project impacted society, what kind of reactions were expressed by the different social actors, how they were aligned and which were the intervention strategies deployed by each sector.
