“A true challenge of history": the reception of Teología de la Liberacion. Perspectivas in the Chilean Road to Socialism, 1970-1973

Through the analysis of publications produced within the Chilean Catholic world in the course of the Chilean Road to Socialism, this article aims to historically interpret the use of the concept of liberation as an objective of religious action and a horizon for social change. In addition, it will analyse and interpret the reception of the work of the Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez, Teología de la liberación. Perspectivas within the national theological field. The early and controversial nature of this reception will be highlighted. On the one hand, authors adhering to the Unidad Popular government saw in it a political and doctrinal support for their commitment to the cause of socialism and the history of Latin America. On the other hand, its critics interpreted it as an undue centrality of political action, a weakening of the transcendent nature of theological reflection, and a threat to the unity of the Church.
