In When the Steel Was Tempered: The Communist Youth of Chile in the Early Years of the Dictatorship (1973-1979), Rolando Álvarez sets out to reconstruct the history of the Communist Youth of Chile (hereafter, JJCC), the youth wing of the Chilean Communist Party (hereafter, PCCh), during the early years of the Pinochet regime. The book represents the initial step in this reconstruction, as it is presented as the first volume, covering the period from 1973 to 1979.
