Abstract

This article aims to contribute to the knowledge of the process of settlement and distribution of public land generated from the implementation of the 1501 Law of 1897, for the National Territory of Chubut. In particular we will focus in the so-called “Colonia Sarmiento", analyzing the way the different population groups which were granted lands in the colony’s territory were located and classified. This process involves state agencies, through land inspectors that visited each resident and provided a report that was passed on to the national authorities. Here we analyze the discourse emanating from the documents that were considered over time to determine, promote or reject the legitimacy of the occupation of the territory.
