Abstract

This work has been written for three years; but different circumstances; and a certain shyness, prevented Mr. de Roquefeuil from delivering it to print: it was only when he went on a long journey that, giving in to his family's requests, they left his manuscript with the permission to make the use that she wanted. One of the author's brothers was responsible for the publication of this journal, but no change was made. The work is faithful to how it was written on board the Bordelais. For this reason, the reader should not expect to find pompous phrases, from which the main objective is to shine at the expense of the truth: this is the language of a mariner who describes everything he sees, and gives an account of pleasant or painful emotions that the big picture before his eyes makes him feel. We can, moreover, easily recognize a certain tone of locality that is the distinctive seal of its good faith.
