Abstract

The 12th article of the Ordinance of Intendants for
New Spain of 1786 established that alcaldes mayores should be
replaced by sub-delegates. This work aims to show that this change
was a slow process full of nuances, which initially privileged the
continuation of the old officials. This situation has led to the
suggestion that actually there were no changes at all. It is argued
that these agents, connoisseurs of their jurisdictions, were able to
implement, negotiate or adapt the transformations proposed by
the Ordinance with greater ease, laying the foundation for their
successors.
