Abstract

is paper explores the field of political discourse from
the perspective of the press. Journalism is here considered as an
actor that operates on and from a particular historic reality, within
a certain social space that frequently implies confrontations, the
establishment of relationships with supporters and enemies, and
which proposes a recurrent struggle between enunciators, due to
its polemic dimension. is paper analyses journalistic documents
produced between the 1850s and 1890s, with the aim of exploring
the evolution of the discourses that competed to hegemonize the
field, to analyze the strategies deployed in the performance of
the mediation role that journalism fulfilled between civil society
and the State, and to detect the progressive transformation of the
different publics.
