This paper intends to address the way in which Rousseau’s work represents both a radically democratic stand against the contract’s liberal discourses, and one of the most conservative theories in relation to women at the same time. Reading the major texts of Rousseau in the light of contemporary feminist theory, this paper develops a critical analysis of the place assigned to women in his theory, by focusing on descriptions about the state of nature, the contract, education, public-private distinction, and the political consequences that derive from there.Downloads
